Art Blog #153: 4 Reasons Why I Never Went to Art Academy

As a self-taught artist, I’m often asked why I didn’t pursue a formal education at an art academy. The truth, much like my paintings, has many layers. Here are the four key reasons that shaped my decision.

1. Financial Security Was a Family Value

Let’s start with the obvious: financial security. In many fields, the path after graduation is more predictable, but for art students, it often involves financial struggles and precarious living situations. Growing up, my family placed immense value on stability and a steady income. In our household, art was seen less as a career and more as a “hobby”—something to be admired but not pursued. In fact, artists were often stereotyped as eccentric, unreliable, or downright impractical. These views, though misguided, shaped my perception as a young person and steered me away from the art academy.

2. The Fear of “Not Being Good Enough”

Imposter syndrome is real, and for me, it was a massive hurdle. The idea of competing with countless talented peers—all vying for recognition—was daunting. What if I didn’t stand out? What if I wasn’t good enough? These fears can paralyze even the most passionate creatives.

It wasn’t until later in life that I realized there isn’t one single “path” to becoming an artist. Success is no longer solely tied to diplomas or formal training. The internet, social media, and global connectivity have revolutionized how artists share their work with the world. While it’s true that not having an art degree comes with its challenges, I’ve learned that passion and persistence can open just as many doors as a certificate.

3. I’ve Built My Own Education

My journey has been anything but traditional, and that’s exactly what makes it special. Over the years, I’ve pieced together an education that’s tailored to me. Museums, exhibitions, YouTube tutorials, online courses, books, and conversations with fellow creatives became my teachers. Add to that my degree in art history and experience as a museum curator, and I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge that serves me today.

Why should I study art formally now when I’ve already built a strong foundation? Many academies focus on moulding young talents fresh out of school, and private institutions often come with hefty price tags. For me, it simply doesn’t make sense to go back when I’ve already found my voice as an artist.

4. The Self-Taught Path Has Strengthened Me

Walking the self-taught path has been far from easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. Without the structure of an academy, I’ve had to push myself harder, think creatively, and trust in my own abilities. These lessons are priceless, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Every artist’s journey is unique. Mine didn’t lead through the gates of an art academy but straight into the world of colors, canvases, and endless possibilities. And that’s exactly where I’m meant to be.
