The Inspiration Behind My Art
The cosmos has always held a front seat with me, sparking curiosity about the unknown and our place in the universe. Similarly, since Jurassic Park, paleontology brings me face-to-face with our planet's ancient history, the fossils of creatures that once roamed the Earth millions of years ago. For me, these two interests naturally connect, painting a picture of wonder about where we come from and where we are going. This dual inspiration finds its way into each of my sculptures, merging the vastness of space with the textures and forms reminiscent of prehistoric life.
Crafting Each Sculpture: The Process
Creation of my sculptures begins with 3d modeling and digital visualization. I start with 3D modeling software, mapping out each line and curve, envisioning how the final piece will look and interact with light and space. I am pretty much a digital sculptor. Once the design is complete, I use laser cutting to carve the steel, allowing me to achieve both precision and detail that are critical in bringing each piece to life.
After laser cutting, the process transforms the cold steel into something dynamic and evocative. Each sculpture undergoes treatments, giving the steel surface a unique texture or patina that enhances the overall narrative. Whether it's the sheen that mimics distant stars or a textured surface hinting at ancient fossils, each detail tells part of the story.
Bridging Art and Science Through Steel
Steel may seem an unlikely material to explore such enigmatic subjects, but it provides the strength and permanence I need to illustrate the timelessness of these themes. Each piece stands as a monument to both the resilience of prehistoric life and the boldness of our space-exploration aspirations including Europa Clipper and occupying Mars.
For example, one recent sculpture titled “Stellar Fossil” combines elements of a spiral galaxy with the skeletal form of an ancient creature, as though the galaxy itself holds the fossil of a life that once was. It embodies the concept of cosmic archaeology – the idea that, somewhere among the stars, fragments of ancient life might linger, waiting to be discovered.
Another piece, “Nebula Relic”, presents the outline of a nebula intertwined with textures that evoke fossilized remains. This work imagines a distant universe where galaxies carry records of past life within their luminous clouds, blending the idea of cosmic creation with earthly origins.
Finding Your Own Meaning in the Cosmos
While each piece has its own inspiration, my hope is that viewers find personal meaning and curiosity within them. Some might be drawn to the mystery of the universe, others to the wonder of prehistoric worlds. There’s a sense of awe in realizing that every human, every creature, and every star is part of an intricate, universal story. Art can be a window to explore these big questions, and steel, with its raw permanence, becomes a powerful medium for embodying these timeless connections.
