“I find inspiration in nature, in the bales of hay, sunflower, or buckwheat fields. I find it most unique when the sunshine highlights the flora and fauna. It manifests the most impressive during the sunrises or sunsets.” Tanbelia presents herself and her Art first time in the Hybrid Gallery Von Hauerland.

What is Plein Air Painting?

Plein-air painting is about creating paintings outdoors in nature or in cities with lots of hustle and bustle. The pioneers were the French Impressionists, who painted according to impressions and feelings. For me, plein-air painting is an integral part of my creativity wherever I am. In such places, ideas and inspiration bubble up and develop more quickly.

Challenge yourself in unfamiliar territory

Under unfamiliar conditions, your brain works more productively and you come up with new ideas or insights in your creative life. Don’t take too many art materials with you, for example not all colours and brushes in all sizes. Try to take less art materials with you and you will see how creative you can be and you will feel the flow of inspiration. You will find new ways to create art without much effort and without intention.

The diversity of the place

I have painted in the plein-air in 10 different countries and have come to the following conclusion. Wherever you are, there are two types of outdoor painting – the hustle and bustle of the city and harmony with nature. Both have their advantages and no disadvantages. Place yourself in the hustle and bustle of the city or in popular tourist spots if you want to meet new people. Make sure it is legal to paint in your area. Please, you will enjoy meeting people all over the world. You can make new contacts, find new fans for your art, become more confident and improve your performance skills. I know that artists are generally shy, introverted people, and I am too. But I can’t imagine that you won’t enjoy the experience!

Choose quiet places to find happiness and reach your inner voice. Being in tune with nature means being at peace with yourself, without masks, seeing yourself from the inside and enjoying your favorite pastime. I love the feeling of being a person in the world, in the middle of nowhere, I feel it when I’m sitting in the bushes somewhere in this world.

Sometimes it's fun and embarrassing at the same time to paint in nature. Because in such areas people don’t know much about art, so a stranger walks around near the pond, takes photos and then sits for a long time and does something (paints). I have had the diver who was spearfishing follow me and claim I was filming him. I didn’t even see him because he was underwater. He exposed his illegal work by himself. Then I was stopped and checked by a military officer because he thought I was taking photos of a water station. I was just looking for a new plot for flower art and didn’t know that this station existed in this place. In Cambodia, I was expelled from some temples several times because the security officers were very worried that I might somehow damage sand and stones. But I properly explained to them that I wasn’t going anywhere and that I was doing everything right.

Are there differences between plein air and studio art?

The answer is yes. Both venues have some advantages, but no disadvantages. They complement each other. In the studio, you have more time, color, comfort and peace to create. These artworks are more detailed, more thought out and offer more room for experimentation and mistakes. The plein air paintings are very expressive and emotional, they require much more professionalism and experience. Because nature changes every second and you don't have time to think about composition, colors, and so on. The artists have to realize their impressions quickly, and that is possible if you have enough experience. The biggest advantage of plein air painting is the opportunity to get distracted, find new ways, look for new, fresh ideas and dive deep into creativity.

For example the studio artwork and plein air artwork. You can notice the difference in the details:

Some weather challenges

The artist should pay attention to the lighting. The bright sunlight always distorts and changes the colors. In my opinion this is the most difficult part, it can be surprising to see the artwork in normal daylight, it gives the impression that you are looking through a filter. And the second problem that really bothers me is the high humidity. Especially when you are working in watercolor, the painting does not dry for a long time. But you get used to these moments and learn to live with them.

But all this pales in contrast to the exquisite natural atmosphere that the artist tries to convey in the work. Plein air is often even more special because it not only has a pictorial history, but also the physical history of the creation process.

* I have shared my personal experiences and conclusions. Please note that it may be different for each person as we are very individual.
