From Stars to Steel

Art and science have always shared a profound connection, both driven by a desire to explore the unknown and express the unexplainable. For me, this relationship is the foundation of my kinetic sculptures, where celestial phenomena and cutting-edge discoveries shape my creations. In this blog, I’d like to take you on a journey into the cosmos to reveal how space exploration inspires my art—and how steel becomes the medium through which these dreams are realized.

The Spark: Space and Paleontology Combined

Growing up, my twin passions were paleontology and space exploration—two fields that, at first glance, might seem worlds apart. Yet, both explore humanity's origins and our place in the universe. I often wondered: what would it look like if the remains of ancient creatures and celestial mysteries intertwined? That question became the driving force behind my artistic vision, merging prehistoric life with the vast unknown of outer space.

This intersection has influenced everything from the shapes and textures I incorporate into my designs to the stories I aim to tell. For example, one of my favorite sculptures, Ecliptic Fossil, resembles a dinosaur spine that doubles as an orbital path around an unseen star. It’s a reflection of how all life—past and present—is intrinsically tied to the universe.

The Tools of Creation: 3D Software and Laser Cutting

To bring my ideas to life, I work primarily with 4mm steel sheets. This material embodies the permanence and resilience of both ancient fossils and the celestial bodies I revere. Using advanced 3D software, I design intricate models that capture the fluid motion of kinetic sculptures. Every detail—from a hinge that allows movement to the curvature of a "cosmic tail"—is meticulously planned.

Once the design is finalized, laser cutting technology translates my vision into reality. The precision of the laser creates crisp, clean edges that add a futuristic touch, while the raw steel maintains a connection to Earth's primal elements. It’s this balance between the old and the new, the natural and the engineered, that defines my work.

Kinetic Sculptures: Bringing the Universe to Life

Kinetic sculptures breathe life into static materials. The movement in my pieces represents the dynamic, ever-changing nature of the universe—planets orbiting, stars pulsating, and galaxies spiraling. For instance, my sculpture Galactic Pulse features layered steel plates that rotate around a central axis, mimicking the rhythm of a pulsar star. These movements invite viewers to interact with the sculpture, sparking curiosity and a sense of wonder.

I believe this interaction is crucial. Just as space exploration fuels our imagination and deepens our understanding of the cosmos, my sculptures aim to evoke the same sense of discovery. By turning a crank or observing the gentle motion of a piece, viewers become participants in a larger narrative—one that asks profound questions about our place in the universe.

The Universe as a Muse

Space exploration offers endless inspiration. Whether it’s the ethereal beauty of the Rosette Nebula, the haunting void of black holes, or the hope represented by missions like Europa Clipper, the cosmos is a constant source of awe. Each new discovery pushes the boundaries of what we know and challenges us to think differently—much like art does.

When I create, I aim to capture not just the visuals of space but the emotions it evokes: the curiosity, the smallness, the infinite possibility. In doing so, I hope my sculptures resonate with fellow space enthusiasts, dreamers, and anyone who’s ever looked up at the night sky and wondered.

Connecting Through Art

My sculptures are more than just physical objects—they’re a dialogue between science and imagination, past and future, humanity and the stars. As I continue to explore new techniques and ideas, I’m excited to see how the universe will shape my next creations.

If you’re as captivated by the cosmos as I am, I invite you to explore my gallery and discover how art and space can come together in unexpected and meaningful ways. Let’s continue to dream big and reach for the stars—in steel and beyond.
